BMW Z1 (E30)

The BMW Z1 has some special design and technology features. Although the already familiar inline six-cylinder engine was taken over virtually unchanged in the BMW Z1, it was installed as a front mid-engine to enable a better axle load distribution to be achieved. Together with a long wheelbase, a wide track and a completely revised rear axle design, the BMW Z1 yielded a very sporty driving experience that permitted high cornering speeds. The bodywork was made up of a self-supporting hot-dip galvanised monocoque chassis provided with a plastic outer skin. However, a unique highlight was provided by the retractable doors which could also remain "open" ("offen") even when the vehicle was in motion.
