The BMW M5 embodied a high-power sedan encapsulated within a discreet body. A V8 engine (S62B50) was used in an M Series model for the first time. The engine had technical refinements like an electronically controlled individual throttle system and double VANOS. A power output of 400 hp accelerated the M5 from 0 to 100 km/h within the space of 5.3 sec. Power was delivered by a manual six-speed gearbox. The advanced, lightweight alloy chassis facilitated highly dynamic driving combined with a high level of comfort, which made the M5 a sporty athlete suitable as an everyday runabout and also ideal for long-distance travel.
