The second generation of the BMW M5 saw the use of a revised version of the six-cylinder inline engine with an individual throttle system from the BMW M1 (S38B36) for the last time. The visual appearance was shaped by an optimised body subtly shaped by aerodynamic contouring with an optional rear spoiler. The technology featured a specially tuned chassis with tauter dampers, more direct steering and a braking system bigger by 13 mm on the front axle. Up until January 1992, the BMW M5 was built powered by this engine with a displacement of 3.5 litres. A major technical revision was then carried out.
