During its production run, the BMW M3 (E30) went through numerous development stages and special models, which were almost an annual occurrence. A four-cylinder inline engine was installed with a displacement of 2.3 litres (S14B23) and it initially generated an output of 200 hp. When the catalytic converter was introduced to the German market in 1987, the output was throttled back to 195 hp. In September 1989, the BMW M3 was given an increase in power to 215 hp (with a catalytic converter). Sporty equipment, scintillating handling characteristics and a good power-to-weight ratio attracted more than 17,000 purchasers.
