The BMW M1 is a mid-engined super sports car produced by BMW Motorsport GmbH. It was first presented to a public audience at the Paris Autosalon in the autumn of 1978. The road-going version was created as a homologation series for a BMW racing car, which was developed for Group 4 racing. This project was launched as a joint venture between BMW and Lamborghini with the involvement of designer Giorgio Giugiaro. After Lamborghini got into financial difficulties, the collaboration had to be brought to an end in 1978. This led to delays in series manufacture so that the first BMW M1 could only be delivered in 1979. 399 units of the road-going versions of the M1 packing 277 hp had been delivered by 1981. Numerous celebrities were part of the exclusive circle of enthusiastic customers.
