The BMW M1 was equipped with a six-cylinder in-line engine (M88), which was positioned as a mid-engine directly behind the passenger compartment. It had four valves per cylinder and mechanical injection with a single throttle system. With an engine capacity of 3.5 liters, it delivered up to 277 hp. With a top speed of 262 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, it was one of the fastest sports cars in the world at the time. The legendary BMW M1 engine inherited a number of other M GmbH models, including the BMW M5 (E34), in which a revised version of the engine was installed for the last time.
