In April 1997, BMW presented dealers with a new version of the BMW Z3 fitted with an inline six-cylinder engine: the BMW Z3 2.8. Up to the model year 1999, an inline six-cylinder engine with four valves to each cylinder and variable camshaft control for the intake camshaft was installed in the vehicle (M52B28). From February 1999, a technically revised version of the engine with double VANOS and DISA (Differentiated Intake System) was fitted (M52TU). In 1999, the BMW Z3 2.8 was also given a visual model revision. Until the introduction of the M Roadster, the BMW Z3 2.8 was the flagship model of the Z3 Series. This also entailed more upscale standard equipment. Until the end of production in September 2000, more than 50,600 vehicles of this type rolled off the assembly line.
