The BMW 730iL (E32) was initially powered exclusively by an inline six-cylinder engine but from 1992 the car was also supplied with a V8 engine (M30B30) in parallel. The M60B30 engine installed in the car delivered 160 kW (218 hp) from a displacement of 2997 cc. It was equipped with advanced four-valve technology and each cylinder bank was fitted with two overhead camshafts. The visual appearance of vehicles powered by V8 engines differs from the six-cylinder models with a wider twin-kidney grille of the kind that was also installed in the models with a V12 engine.
