Production of the BMW 700 Coupé started in 1959. It was fitted as standard with the two-cylinder Boxer engine originating from the model series BMW 700. In August 1960, the version BMW 700 Sport offered an increase in power of 10 hp, generating 40 hp and registering a top speed of 135 km/h. An optional sports transmission and a tauter chassis completed the sporting package. During the 1960s, the BMW 700 Sport was also popular in motor sport as a basic vehicle. With effect from the model revision in March 1963, the car was given the designation BMW 700 CS.
