The new flagship model powered by a 3.5 litre six-cylinder engine, the BMW 535i, was launched four years after the presentation of the second generation of the BMW 5 Series (E28). The BMW 535i was revealed as an extremely sporty yet nevertheless comfortable touring sedan with a top speed of 225 km/h and acceleration in the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds. A version with the same technology but more sporty equipment was available for the American market under the designation BMW 535iS.
