In 1977, the BMW 528i replaced the carburetted BMW 528. The 2.8 litre inline six-cylinder engine was then fuelled by means of an electronic injection system (BOSCH L-Jetronic). This increased the engine output of the BMW 528i to 177 hp, and from the model year 1978 this power even increased to 184 hp. On this basis, the BMW 528i succeeded in achieving a top speed in excess of 200 km/h, which was hugely impressive for the conditions at that time. By 1981, these statistics and the enhanced level of equipment had led to the BMW 528i being purchased by more than 65,700 customers.
