The touring car version of the BMW 303 was fitted with the new six-cylinder inline engine (M78a or M303), which was exclusively developed for the model. It was the first six-cylinder inline engine from BMW and featured very good running characteristics. The touring car was not very popular at all - between August 1933 and February 1934 just two units rolled off the assembly line at the plant. The large dimensions of the interior and foldable front seats for easy entry meant that the BMW 303 touring car was actually the ideal vehicle and most affordable motor car as a conveyance for transporting four people.
