The BMW M3 (E30) was the first BMW M3 and therefore the forebear of a series of successes that endures down to today. It debuted at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985 and the intention was to mark a return to the sporty brand core of the company. It was based on the BMW 3 Series (E30). Initially, the BMW M3 was only supplied as a two-door sedan but was also available as a convertible from 1988. Over the course of the production period, special versions and further developments came onstream almost every year. After some major successes in various racing series around the world, production of the sedan came to an end in 1990 and a year later the convertible was also discontinued. The BMW M3 is regarded as the most successful touring car ever produced.
