An extensive revision of the visual appearance, engine and equipment resulted in an improved version of the BMW M3 Convertible (E36) from October 1995. It was first launched onto the marketplace in March 1996. Changes to the bore and stroke gave the engine a displacement of 3.2 litres (S50B32). It also featured continuously variable control of the intake and exhaust camshaft (double VANOS), a technology used here for the first time. The BMW M3 Convertible was first launched on the North American market in April 1998. Production in Regensburg came to an end in August 1999 after only 3,870 units had been manufactured (excluding US models).
