An extensive revision of the visual appearance, engine and equipment yielded an improved version of the BMW M3 Sedan (E36) from February 1995. The engine was given a displacement of 3.2 litres (S50B32) as a result of changes to the bore and stroke. It also features continuously variable control of the intake and exhaust camshaft (double VANOS), a technology that was used here for the first time. This enabled the BMW M3 (E36) to achieve a power output of 321 hp. From September 1996, a special version of the BMW M3 Sedan was supplied for purchase in the North American market for the first time. In November 1996, production for South Africa was started up at the Rosslyn Plant. Otherwise, production of the BMW M3 Sedan continued to be located in Regensburg. A total of 2,690 units were produced worldwide (apart from North America).
