The second BMW 5 Series generation E28 saw BMW presenting a diesel-powered vehicle for the first time in 1983 in the form of the 524td. This defined benchmarks right from the start. The new six-cylinder engine immediately impressed with good performance, astonishingly smooth running for a diesel power unit and low fuel consumption. Powered by the fastest turbo diesel in the world, BMW gave a persuasive demonstration that the driving pleasure so typical of BMW and diesel technology are by no means mutually exclusive.
