In 1968, the Grand Coupés (Große Coupés) came on to the market. This was the point when BMW (together with the Grand Sedan (Große Limousine) in the E3 model series) rejoined the luxury class at the top of the range. They were designed to be very sporty, especially the BMW 3.0 CSL model, which also had a very successful racing career in motor sport. The design of the body was penned by Manfred Rennen, the front of the automobile was decorated by the typical BMW ornamentation attributes of twin headlamps and double kidney grille. The Grand Coupés (Große Coupés) are the precursors of the BMW 6 Series (E24).
