As was already the case for the first generation of the BMW 5 Series, the successor was only supplied as a four-door sedan. The language of design borrowed a great deal from the previous model and the first engines were also familiar from the E12. However, the range of power plants supplied was gradually expanded and defined milestones in the history of BMW. These benchmarks included the first diesel engine in the BMW 524d and the BMW 524 td, and the fuel-efficient eta engine in the 525e. Then there was the BMW M535i, designed to enthuse motor-sport fans. After all, the flagship model in the series ultimately became the first BMW M5.
