In May 1977, a successor was introduced for the Grand Class (Große Klasse) from BMW in the form of the 7 Series. This was the forebear of the flagship model series. The introduction of the series nomenclature launched in 1972 was also completed with the presentation of the 7 Series. The sedan combined a design creating a visually appealing appearance with a large number of technical innovations. Initially, customers were only able to choose between three models with a displacement of 2.8 litres and generating an output of 170 hp, 3.0 litres and 184 hp and 3.2 litres with 197 hp. The flagship for the first 7 Series was the BMW 745i powered by a muscular six-cylinder turbo engine generating 252 hp.
