BMW's first post-war model was the BMW 501. It was launched on the marketplace in 1952 but was unable to fulfil the company's expectations. In particular, the engine output of 65 hp and the high price tag were the target of criticism. In spring 1954, BMW therefore presented the successor models BMW 501 A and 501 B. These vehicles offered significantly improved performance owing to the engine with an increased output of 72 hp. The BMW 501 B was also more simply equipped and could therefore be marketed at a significantly lower price.
