The successes of the BMW 328 in motor sport raised the interest of customers in sporty vehicles from the BMW stable. The automotive company therefore set about developing a 2+2 seater sports convertible. The new BMW 327 was ultimately presented in 1937. A no less elegant sports coupé followed from October 1938. The engine performance was not particularly impressive given this class and there was indeed occasional criticism. Nevertheless, 1,303 well-heeled motorists had purchased the pricey convertible by 1941. They preferred the comfort and elegance of the BMW 327 to bragging rights about horsepower.
