The BMW 323i Sedan (E46) was closely related to the BMW 323ti Compact (E36) - at least in technical terms. The sedan was powered by the identical six-cylinder inline engine with a displacement of 2.5 litres (M52B25TU). Variable Double VANOS was also integrated into the engine arrangement. This enabled the engine installed in the BMW 323i Sedan to generate 170 hp. However, the model did not benefit from the facelift for the BMW 3 Series Sedans (E46) in September 2001 and the switch to the new M54 engine. It was discontinued in the year 2000 and replaced by the BMW 325i Sedan (E46). Over a production run lasting just two and a half years, 133,400 units were manufactured in Munich, Dingolfing and Regensburg.
