The BMW 318i Touring was already launched in the marketplace in 1999. Consequently, the M43TÜ engine from the previous generation was adopted in the first instance. It was designed with a two-valve arrangement for each cylinder and delivered a power output of 118 hp. From 2001, the new N42 engine with four valves to each cylinder, Double VANOS and VALVETRONIC was also installed in the BMW 318i Touring. This milestone in the development of BMW engines enabled the vehicle to develop a maximum power output of 143 hp.
