The BMW 318ti Compact (E46) was only launched in September 2001. This automobile closed the major gap between the small BMW 316ti and the BMW 325ti flagship model. It adopted the four-cylinder inline engine with VALVETRONIC and variable Double VANOS provided with a somewhat enlarged displacement (N42B20) from the BMW 316ti. Consequently, the car achieved a maximum power output of 143 hp and a top speed of 214 km/h. A production run falling just short of 28,000 units meant it lagged far behind the sales success of its predecessor (BMW 318ti E36, almost 100,000 units).
