The smallest version of the convertibles in the BMW 3 Series (E46) was launched in the autumn of 2001. The latest four-cylinder inline engine (N42B20) from the BMW stable was installed when the BMW 318Ci Convertible was launched. The innovative power plant had Double VANOS technology, which allowed the valve timing to be controlled, and it was also fitted with the new VALVETRONIC system. This additionally permitted adjustment of the valve stroke on the intake side. A lively yet fuel-efficient engine was the result and it accelerated the small convertible in the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h within 10.4 seconds. At a price of EUR 31,400, this convertible primarily attracted customers who were constrained by a limited budget. A total of 29,000 units had been produced by 2006.
