The third generation of the BMW 5 Series (E34) was officially presented in January 1988 and the engineering and visual appearance was closely related to the BMW 7 Series (E 32), which had been released shortly before. Customers had a choice between four-, six- or eight-cylinder engines, between an engine powered by diesel, petrol or natural gas, and between sedan or Touring bodywork, rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Given such a wide product range, it's hardly surprising that the BMW 5 Series (E34) went on to become a successful model. A total of more than 1,300,000 units delivered almost doubled sales figures compared to the predecessor (BMW 5 Series E28). Production came to an end in June 1996 when the successor (BMW 5 Series E39) was already in the starting blocks.
