One year of artisan craftsmanship and lots of historical know-how were required – now the car is ready to go. A BMW 530 MLE was restored in South Africa. The “Motorsport Limited Edition” (MLE) of the classic first-generation BMW 5 Series was only manufactured in South Africa from 1976 and just 227 units were built there. From its first race onwards, the car achieved 15 wins from 15 consecutive starts. Four employees who were involved in production of the original more than 40 years ago took part in the restoration at the Rosslyn plant. A film documents the painstaking work and the impressive result.

It was as though this sport had been tailor-made for the classic Mini. In 1969, the triumphal march of the diminutive runabout was launched with rallycross racing in the United Kingdom. The classic Mini demonstrated its real strengths on the twists and turns driving through sand and mud, outperforming competitors with much more powerful engines. In fact, rallycross had only just been invented as a TV format – undoubtedly one of the best ideas that television producers had ever had.
