The BMW 325i Touring (E46) followed on from the BMW 323i Touring (E36) in Europe.
In contrast to its predecessor, the inline six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2.5 litres (M54B25) now had variable Double VANOS and complied with the Euro 3 emissions standard even though the engine generated more power (193 hp). A version powered by a special engine (M56) was sold in a number of states in the US. This meant that the BMW 325i Touring was classified as a SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle).
