BMW History.

A brief history of BMW.

With BMW Group Classic, the BMW Group can look back on a long tradition. Founded in 1994, BMW Group Classic organises and coordinates all activities relating to the history of the company and the brands BMW, BMW Motorrad, MINI, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Foundation of BMW.

The history of BMW begins with Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto. Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW) was founded in 1916 on the initiative of the state from the flying machine factory founded by Gustav Otto. At the same time, Rapp Motorenwerke became Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH in 1917. In 1922, BMW AG transferred its engine production, including the company name and brand, to BFW. This means that BFW was founded on 7th March 1916, which is also the date on which BMW was founded.

BMW R 32 – The first BMW Motorcycle.

In 1923, at the Berlin Motor Show, BMW presented a motorcycle designed by Max Friz that would revolutionise the industry. The BMW R 32 was impressive not only because of its design, but above all because of its technical sophistication. All parts requiring repair were encapsulated and the shaft drive was easier to maintain than the usual chains or belts. The air-cooled boxer engine, the propeller shaft, and the high-quality workmanship made it a pioneer of its time. The BMW R 32 is therefore regarded as a milestone in motorcycle history.

BMW 501: The first post-war BMW.

The BMW 501, produced from 1952, was BMW's first post-war automobile. The six-seater sedan, powered by a six-cylinder engine developed from the pre-war BMW 326, positioned BMW as a manufacturer of high-quality luxury cars. The BMW 501 laid the foundation for the future direction of the brand.

BMW had its finger on the pulse when it unveiled the BMW 1500 at the IAA motor show in 1961. This compact, sporty 4-door mid-range sedan marked BMW's breakthrough as a modern car manufacturer. Customers were so enthusiastic about the concept that orders exceeded production capacity.

Launch of the BMW i3.

In 2013, BMW ushered in a new era of electric mobility: With the BMW i3, the BMW i brand launched its first all-electric production vehicle. The emission-free drive system offered a completely new driving experience that combines agility and sheer driving pleasure. Sustainability had never been more exciting.
