“Hollywood on the Lake” was the motto for this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza, taking place in the chic and enchanting parkland of the Villa d’Este luxury hotel at Lake Como, Italy. In partnership with BMW Group Classic, the world’s most extraordinary historic cars and motorcycles came once again together for a beauty contest whose exclusivity and tradition are arguably without parallel.

Automotive beauty pageants were already popular back in the 1920s, serving as meeting points not only for the great and beautiful of the human world, but also proud owners and fans of similarly endowed vehicles. At the same time, Hollywood’s movie industry was busy casting its spell over the world at large – and its stars were keen to be seen riding in automobiles which couldn’t help but steal whichever scene they happened to be bestriding. And so two magical worlds collided, the stars of road and screen taking turns to soak up the limelight. What better reason for this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza to dedicate itself to this period in history and bring Hollywood to Lake Como.

Drama and passion. Classics brimming with history.

Hollywood is a byword for glamour, emotion and stories whose dramatic threads and fondness for the imponderables of destiny are often mirrored by cars of a similar nature. Never before has the Concorso welcomed automotive specimens of such variety and breadth – models built between 1909 and 1985, engines producing 10 to 850 horsepower, eight classes ranging from “The Titans: Dirt, Dust and Danger” to “When Sex Was Safe and Racing Was Dangerous: Formula One”. This is adventure of the type you only get on four wheels.

Wind in your face. Classic motorcycles.

However, history is also replete with incredibly exciting tales involving motorcycles, fuelled forever by the pursuit of better solutions to technical riddles. Design may have played a less prominent role on two wheels than four, but then even small marques were only a racing triumph or two away from global fame. At the Concorso d’Eleganza, this heritage is showcased by classes including “Golden Years for American Motorcycles”, “New Ideas for the 1950s” and “Winning Italian Singles”, which celebrates the contribution of skilfully honed 250cc single-cylinder engines. The thirst to improve remains a force for progress today, as evidenced by the “Concept Bikes” at the Concorso, which promise to whisk us straight past the present day into the heart of the future.

And the winner is …

Many have been coming to the Concorso d’Eleganza for years and all are here to experience the very special ambience in person. Needless to say, there were also some coveted awards up for grabs, including the Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este and Trofeo BMW Group.
