Special Exhibition Elvis’ BMW 507.

Elvis’ BMW 507 was rediscovered in California and extensively restored in Munich. A special exhibition at the BMW Museum shows various stages in the life of this very special vehicle.

This BMW 507 rocks! Not many cars can boast such an exciting life story. Painted a gleaming snow-white, this BMW 507 sports icon was displayed at the IAA in 1957, then raced with Hans Stuck at the wheel and in 1958, was sold to Elvis Presley while he was posted to Germany as part of his military service. The King of Rock ’n’ Roll had a lot of fun with the sports car, which he later had re-sprayed a fiery red – which they say was done to cover up all those traces of lipstick kisses, left by female fans!

The car returned to the USA and came to be owned by a racing driver, who was not overly precious with his vehicles, replacing the motor and the rear axle of the BMW 507 with the US large series ware. In the late 1960s, Californian car enthusiast and collector Jack Castor bought an extremely dilapidated vehicle and installed it in a squash court. For years, the car gathered dust while the owner dreamt of restoring it one day.

By pure chance, things started to change in 2006. An American reporter discovered the chassis number for Elvis’ BMW 507; Jack Castor got in touch with her and a miracle took place. Elvis’ BMW 507 was allowed to return to Munich to undergo an equally meticulous and ambitious restoration, just as Jack Castor had always wanted.

The special exhibition at the BMW Museum dedicated to Elvis’ BMW 507 runs between 9 May 2017 and 4 March 2018.

Please be aware that the Elvis’ BMW 507 will not be on display from August 30th until September 4th 2017 and October 2nd until October 10th 2017.
