LAKE VIEWS. CONCORSO D’ELEGANZA VILLA D’ESTE 2017.

The BMW Group Classic and the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este once again invites you to Lake Como from 26 to 28 May 2017 for the Concorso d'Eleganza, the world's most exclusive and tradition-steeped historic vehicle beauty contest. Inspired by the Jules Verne novel, this year’s motto is “Around the World in 80 Days – Voyage through an Era of Records”. It promises to be an event of utter superlatives.

The Grand Hotel Villa d'Este and the Villa Erba are set amidst a beautiful park right by Lake Como in northern Italy. Together they form an atmospheric backdrop for one-of-a-kind gathering of the rarest, most spectacular and most beautiful cars and motorcycles of all eras. A hand-picked jury of international experts will award prizes in several categories, which are also intended to pay homage to the engineers and designers who once created these technical masterpieces. The main prizes are the BMW Group Trophy, awarded by the jury, and the Coppa d'Oro Villa d'Este.

Class society.

The vehicles are presented in eight classes, including some as unusual as the Speed Demons, these being particularly high-powered pre-war cars and record-breaking vehicles whose objective was to achieve one thing and one thing only – to be faster than all the others. Phileas Fogg – the main character in Jules Verne”s famous novel “Around the World in 80 Days” – would have preferred the “Goodbye Jazz, Hello Radio” category, because this one is all about “full speed into the 1930s”. Powerful engines and the discovery of design as a sales factor led to the birth of the early icons of automobile history. It gets even faster in the wake of the 1950s and 1960s, which is when the heroes of the jet era appear on stage – the “toys” of playboys and the “little toys for big boys”. All of these will be lined up on one of the most beautiful meadows in Italy, where they can be admired without the need to keep a respectful distance.

One-track heroes.

The motorcycles are subdivided into six classes, adding even more lovely shine to the Concorso d'Eleganza. Starting with the heavy pre-war machines, this time the journey goes via cheap options by small manufacturers to the Japanese market conquerors of the 1960s and the new four-cylinders of the subsequent decade. A particular counterpoint is provided by modern prototypes, which offer a look into what the future holds. And this time, the small 50cc models which previously had a driver age limit of 14 in Italy, will also not be left out.

Villa d'Este is open to all visitors on the public days. If you are planning a short trip to Italy at the end of May, this is one attraction you must not miss. You will have to search far and wide to find a more beautiful parking lot than this one!
