In 1981, Frenchman Hubert Auriol wins the Paris-Dakar Rallye on the BMW R 80 G/S. His victory surprises many, as the heavy BMWs are considered exotic and hopeless against established enduros. But Auriol prevails over the favorites and thus impressively demonstrates the off-road capabilities of the BMW R 80 G/S. Auriol can repeat his victory in 1983, while in 1984 and 1985, Belgian Gaston Rahier again wins the legendary rally. The engine of the winning machine specially built for this purpose in 1985 now has a displacement of one liter and the output is 25 hp higher than that of the standard R 80 G/S model.
